the detroit music community has outposts in nearly every major city, and vancouver, british columbia is no exception. this ep represents the connection of two such artists, detroit native, josh garrett, who currently resides in vancouver and runs the subspec label, and rennie foster, a stalwart of the underground, who has spent a quarter of his life in tokyo, but born in bc and now living back there, in vancouver. rennie has released on a myriad of detroit labels, such as transmat, teknotika, soiree, subject detroit, wallshaker, and motech. josh and rennie met in vancouver, only since rennies recent return, and realizing they were of the same tribe, immediately began to collaborate on a number of projects, now including this limited run, double a-side, record, chalk full of dj friendly techno trax, firmly rooted in the motor city sound, yet unique enough to be a contributor, not just another imitator.

arturo garces, our brother from the west coast, returns to robsoul with his looking for strangers ep. loved by the robsoul community for his beats from the streets series, the san jose resident first appeared on the label back in 2012 with a trio of tracks that made up vol.1. two more collections followed and firmly established arturo as one of the labels most exciting talents. a label boss himself, arturo is seen as having helped define what is known as the silicon valley sound. his own blend of beat-laden house infused with elements of soul, funk and disco has seen him become a favourite with the likes of sneak, farina and weeks.

with a firm nod to the community, revered techno aficionado, roberto reveals the launch of his new record label, fossil archive and its first release *prolecanites gurleyi*. roberto has already built quite the discography with previous releases on fachwerk, affin, artform and be as one, as well as establishing himself as a dj with gigs at the likes of fabric, berghain and tresor and recently took time out from his busy schedule to talk to marcus barnes for the independents blog.

nathan fake and wesley matsell are both producers best known for their releases on border community - nathan fake has been putting out psychedelic permutations on dance music since 2003 for the label, while matsell recently released the blissful total order of being ep for them earlier in 2014. cambria instruments is a new label venture from the pair, and for the first release they have teamed up for a split 12- of kaleidoscopic electronic sounds. nathan fake s contribution black drift starts things off, an initially inauspicious tripping beat gathering momentum and morphing into a far-out piece of fuzzy house underpinned by sunken low-end rumbles. it s the kind of brilliantly wide-eyed track we have come to expect from the producer. over on the flip, wesley matsell s bismuth is a more shadowy, moody affair, a tight techno rhythm holding things together while synths spin wildly. a highly expressive, lysergic trip and one of his finest productions to date. all in all, you couldn t hope for a stronger start from a new label.

a few words by steffen bennemann: when i heard margot for the first time, i instantly fell in love with their synth-driven free- form kraut-techno. strong melodies, insanely well-shaped beats, sometimes driving, sometimes bravely bending the rules. after great releases on james holdens border community, ivan smagghes kill the dj and their own label we were more than happy to welcome them in our holger family. here they can show their more experimental side, far beyond common floor/listening conventions and full of synapse-tickling synth magic. plus a secret pop hit (trentaseitrenta), perfect for closing any exceptional club night.

a word from label boss chris farrell: this is the new one on idle hands, from us producer strategy. i first came across paul dickows work when he released a 12 inch called *world house* on his own community library label back in 2005. it blew me away. in the ensuing years my friend duncan george who promoted bristol’s best electronic music night - under_score tried on numerous ocasions to book him for a bristol date but it never quite hapened due to the usual things that go wrong in club land. in those years duncan kept in touch with paul and last year suggested to him that it might be worth sending some tracks to me, which he did at the start of 2013… add a peverelist remix and you have the tracks here before you, dub reggae informed house and psychedelic 2 step vibes.
